(VSCB) – One of the enormous damages caused by climate change to the Earth is that many areas have high temperatures that exceed the global average temperature due to experiencing serious heat waves, droughts and forest fires, greatly affecting global air quality. Along with that, climate change and extreme weather events also cause food insecurity to increase again since 2014 after decades of decline.

Currently, under the impacts of climate change, many regions in the world become drier and subject to frequent and prolonged droughts. This situation could lead to a tremendous loss of arable land in the coming years, sending millions of farmers into poverty, which is a cause of increasing conflicts around the world.

To fulfill the membership responsibilities and requirements of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, Vietnam develops programs at national, sub-regional and regional level to prevent droughts and desertification; calling on the international community to provide financial support for the fight against desertification; exchange of information, techniques and training on anti-desertification; prevent the consequences of desertification leading to mass migration, extinction of plant and animal species, and climate change.

Members when conforming to the Convention have the following main obligations: to develop an integrated approach to address the physical, biological, and socio-economic problems of the desertification process; to pay attention to developing countries that are currently affected by deserts and droughts, international trade, foreign debt; to build a sustainable economy; to combine the strategy of hunger eradication and poverty reduction with the prevention of desertification; and to strengthen cooperation among countries suffering from desertification and droughts to protect the environment, land and water resources.
